some pictures from this years convention. it was great seeing everyone. too bad so many artist couldn't make it. but we tryed to make the best of it. taking trips to the strip for an all night drink a thon. while trying to get up for the next day of drawing. It was one great week and great turnouts for awards as well. placing second to my close friend Kevin Jackson was an honor, also to see so many BeastHeads place in most top catagories was awesome. so heres a lil of what i got to share. check out facebook: andy urzua for more pictures

hey everyone thanx for everything. is was great hanging with all my good friends in ohio. i came early and was able to hang with Nate kapnickey and his family. also we met up with Aaron Philby to visit cedar point an aweome rollarcoaster park with great fellow caricaturist. but the highlight was going to convention which is what we had come out for in the first place. i was so happy to see everyone again and to meet new artist. there was alot of great stuff this year, can't wait for Vegas. hell yeah! .....i'll try to upload soon to facebook/myspace, as soon as facebook/myspace stops acting dumb with the "uploading"

hey guys, haven't posted in awhile, been trying to make that money...since we had to change our prices. its half off caricatures at our park here in Sea World. Some of us picked up real quick with the gimmick , but many of the lifers had the hardest time with it....but man, have we been busy like crazy just shooting out half faced but salable drawings. many of us have been just using three or at most five colors for a whole piece. (beau hufford's always been the champ at that). but even though we've found the ability to perform at full speed but still staying in first gear....we still get the urge to take our time to exaggerate, but its hard at $15 a face....and the lines getting longer and everyone wants a "first year drawing" or a "Oakes fully rendered". But its ok cause we're all in it together. so if you haven't seen any real awesome stuff from your heros like my buddy "Nate Kapnicky" or "Brain Oakes". you will.

hello everyone, theres something that many of you out there don't know.....before i left to japan, my girl friend and i had found out that we would be having a baby. the week before i left to japan to be exact. so i was gone for about two months...my girl had sent me a photo of our baby at about 6 weeks, since i wasnt able to be there. so ive been back and well we're half way through the pregnancy ( 21 wks) now about 5 mths.

so i was finally able to see our baby today, with our sonogram appointment. this was going to be the first time since i'd been back to see our baby, moving and everything. not only that but we would also be able to find out the sex.

man was it nerve wrecking, cloudy wanted a boy....i really didnt care either way....but i was excited.
especially when the doctor was doing her routine, checking the heart, the growth, and even its brain...and everything looked great, our babies heart rate was perfect, its growing according to schedule and its brain was developing surprisingly enough much more advance then i would have expected from myself....hahahaha . i almost choked. but she finally teased us with questions about our expectancies of what our babies sex would be....and well....
We"re having a BOY!! man thats so awesome...he'll be born around Sept 15th. we've already decided on names.our baby at 21 weeks, top and bottom....i like that they typed boy on his Wiener, thats funny....but man does he have a great profile.

so, its been great over here....

the past few weeks have been crazy. my buddy jeremy stock flew in from Buffalo, he had been staying with Tomo and I for several weeks now. did a couple small gigs, did some sight seeing...kinda funny watching another american guy goof up alot. but he was only staying through the convention time and lil after...tomo had helped him set up for his big trip further into JAPAN...on his way to cold cold cold Iwate. which was up north. but it was fun hving him around. kinda changed the experience a lil...but ina good way.

also the mini-con here in Asakusa, Japan was great. i got to meet all other friends i hadnt seen since id gotten here, plus additional members.

conventions here are crazy quick, two days of drawing time (but only til 930pm) and you only get to choose four of your best.....mostly everybody , had only been working on four, maybe three, or really huge ones with many faces.

i just tryed my best to draw everyone i had made friends with, plus there were so many great faces my head was going to explode.

i didnt win any big award, but i did get some sweet drawings of me. thanx for having me Japan.

Live Painting and sketch night in Japan

we had a korean cook out over at Tomos house, everyone came. we drank, we drawded, and just straight up had a good time. was great fun

the next night, me and Taka went to this Bar around midnight in Shibuya, called Module. Where we had been hired to live paint. it was awesome...we didnt start until 2....the place closed at 6.

taka went first, and he painted a lion.....its was pretty cool. i was after....we all took shots before our turns, which made it very interesting. we both spent about 30 to 45 minutes on each setting.

we made friends with everyone there that night, the guest,the djs, the bartenders.

cant wait to get invited back....was an awesome experience. and getting paid for it wasnt so bad either. thanx Taka and club Module for having me.

hey everyone! if you didnt know....i`ve been in Japan the last week...man has it been busy....i`ve been to concerts, meet new people, went dancing, kareoked, i meet the Dj and legendary roots drummer Quest Love and thier guitarist.

Meet up with Kage to prepare for the events at the Tokyo MiniCon...being held in Febuary, the 16th...not to late to enter theres going to be lots of people there...check the NCN forum for more details. very exciting

Tomo and I were also invited to visit at KAges studio to draw with his staff, so they can better thier techniques or something....a learning experience i think, for everyone really.

but all in all its been non stop, i got our friend Jeremy Stock to play a gig down here when he arrives to japan with my bosses daugther , who sings at some small lounge here in Shibuya. and also to sing at the MiniCon.....thats going to be awesome!!!

ncn convention 08 and new york trip

just got back from the Ncn convention in North Carolina in Reliegh....which was very boring, sept for the fact that the convention was great....meeting all the people i wanted to meet and enjoying the company of new faces ( to Draw). each day was great, just flying through ideas....which payed off, i got to bring home some awards ( 1st for both Outstanding Cartoon style and Party Style, 2nd in Abstract/ Design style), the rest of the beastheads also recieved awards. it was great.

Afterwards i went to new york where i stayed with Tomokazu and Yuko tabata and Kunikazu and Kimicho where we meet up up later with Dan Springer, Paul Moyse, Elgin "Subway Surfer", Jeramy Stock, Kayla, Alician, Joe Bluhm and other artist and walked around with or either drew with in bars or on the subways or sight seeing and taking lots of photos. all in all was one of the greater adventures i have ever been on. thanx to everyone for your support on everything, and i'm glad i got to hang out and get to know all of of you out there, you know who you are....it was a pleasure drawing with you and sharing ideas and philosophy. I hope i can meet up with everyone again. thanx

so i just got backfrom my trip to vegas....its was a long a boring ride there, on the bus, but it was worth it. i meet up with Sam who was already waiting for me when i arrived. Man, did we have fun...just goofing around there, walking the strip...getting free stuff...meeting interesting people...drinking....and drinking some more....going dancing....taking pictures, it was fun....cant wait to go back.

the first day i arrived i got to meet some of the other vendors from the strip where she stayed... we got treated with "DEMOS" of everything. from caricatures to Dancing heads...this funny green screen thingy that adds your head to a dancing body with music...i wish i could upload that, but i still have to figure that out. erica, a really cool hippie like artist who does caricatures and murals

so those of you who know Lil Kevin Jackson...its was his birthday on the 31st, he wanted all of us to draw him for his birthday. so i did. those of you who dont know this of kevin, well he really likes his candy( specially sour patches). so i figured id draw him as a lil creature waiting out side the sour patch bag. he's already seen it since this post, and im glad that he liked it, as much as i did drawing it.
meanwhile sam had found her way down to San Diego from her trip to Vegas....where i got to hang out with her, with others like Oakes his girl friend Julia and other friends to show her a good time. we went to the zoo, we bowled, and even went out dancing...all in all...it was fun getting to know her a lil better. heres a link for the photos :

i have fun at work...and i always seem to draw everyone when its not so busy...but ryan was one of those guys i could not figure out, and i felt bad, cause he always draws a picture for me. this is one i was happy with...he also enjoyed it.

while over there, Tomos wife Yuko had given me some post cards of his...i was bored and wanted to try his style out... but i used my tools and i just free handed the drawing...its not clean, and the colors aren't as great as the original...but i just wanted to see how long it would take for me to do and if i could how good of coloring could i have gotten to the original....i still need more work

hey everyone i back..and boy was my trip fun.

the first day i got there i was picked up by my buddy Tomokazu Tabata..and Tom (mr graffitti)

it was cool, but poor Tomo was sick so he had to wear a mask the whole time, so got to experince the trains, i got to play sports like soccar and Wii sports near Mt Fuji...i worked at there Huge mega mall called 7&iholdings, drawing caricatures...

i got to see many of the different parts of Tokyo and the out skirts like Gotenba...i even was fortunate to have stayed over in Yokohama with some other friends.

i made a lot of friends on my trip, and it was so easy cause everyone was so polite.

i reaaly got to know what japan was like...and i had always dreamed of going there.

i sang kareoke..i played video games...i got hit on by girls...i drew people....i prayed, drank and shared stories....and the only thing that makes me sad....is that i had to leave

ill miss my friends, but ill be back...next year

Hey everyone!

my big trip has finally come.

ill be leaving tomorrow at 5am to Japan, non-stop

ill be gone for a few weeks, maybe a month... who knows?

illl be drawing down there as well as some sight seeing (of course)

ill be staying with a friend in Tokyo. so i should save a lil money.

should be exciting.

i always seem to draw Kimmy, she's always easy to draw up when it's slow at work or when i cant think of what to draw.

i always said " when in doubt, draw Kim." and i do draw her a lot. but lately i've been trying to draw myself with her...

and this particular one i like, cause i haven't done a funny one of us together that i've been happy with.

so i think this one does it for me...for now...:) maybe i can get a lil more exaggerated.

dang its been awhile since the first few post i've done on this bloggger.
so let see where am i at with everything.
well i've been busy with my trip to Japan...that is made possiable through my new Japanses Friends...who encouraged me to visit...ill be leaveing the first of February. I cant wait.

So ive just been setting up all the loose ends before i go...communicating with My JApanses friends so i dont get lost...and just planning ahead, so ill be staying wit them and working under them as well...should be fun.

everythings done now...just have to wait...:(

But other than that ive been setting up for my new art show...actually my first official artshow.
i had one before but it was with friends from work. my family and friends showed up...ive gots ton of photos ill put up...and everyone had good time. i might even have another w/ some others who will participate this time around. But getting back to the Art Show i just had...its turn ouit good too...i had to make my own flyers and set up the show myself with food and drinks...i had it at this local Cafe called Chicana Perk...very cool people that work there...Maribel Guzman...the owner...all i had to do was ask. thanks MAri

Works been slow... over here at Sea World..because of the weather...the season ...whatever....but we still try to make the best of it...i know i do...all im doing is drwing my family at work...and showing it to them...just to pass the time....i guess it helps with the creative process.

My Trip To RENO

Alright so i got invited to attend a convention in Reno...Reno, Nevada (with Nate Kapnicky, Arron Philby, Brian Oakes, Matt Zittman, Manny Hernadez, Gabe Hunt, Jeramy Stock, and Chris Daily who follwed behind in his car with girl friend-companion.) Held by the National Caricature Network that hold competitions every year all around the world. Anyway i joined this NCN cause i was working as a Caricature Artist for Sea World over in San Diego, California, (if you havent read my "About Me" spot yet). Everyone said it would be a good idea to join since its like some caricature club/union. So anyway i went to this convention after signing up not knowing what to expect, actually i wasn't even going to go after i had signed up...i had some money issues. I was being real tight with my money. Fortunately for me, i have this cool Mom who just so happened to get wind of my situation and told me that "money comes and goes" and that "i should go because it would be an experience i would never forget". She was right...i just had to realize this before the Others decided to leave without me. So at the last minute i gave in and decided to go on this really cool Road trip to Reno of the greatest gathering of people I ould ever come to meet from all Artistic backgrounds and regions, of all shapes, sizes and ages, gender, ethnicity...whatever. To draw, compete and just have fun...for one solid week.
Ok, so before actually leaving... a couple of weeks before, i received a magazine from The National Caricature NetWork (NCN)....that featured articles and photos of caricature artists pieces from all around the world. So I was reading this one particular Issue and i came upon some interesting drawings of a Japanese artist Named Tomokazu Ogawa...and was quickly amazed on her talent and was determind to meet her if she were to attend this convention.
With that in mind let me get back to the story of me at the convention Pre actual Day- Zero hour ( Breaking the Ice Party..before the actual convention)
So we were there, in the Casino...thats were they had the Convention, at the Nugget Hotel Casino. So we were there among all who had arrived before us...each group with there own clicks or others they new and hadn't seen in awhile. Quickly i spotted a small group of Japanese girls who might have been the one i was looking for, but no, none were to be her.....i finaly gave up and decided that maybe she wasnt coming or that maybe she would arrive later :). With that set, i went to mingle with everyone else...eating drinking and conversating. I sat next to some Japanese guys who were already drawing some of my friends.. and i explained that was very inspired by there styles, that is very cool they had choosen to draw my friends. I came to relize that his style the one of the Japanese guys named Tomokazu Tabata, had such a similiar style to the girl in which i was searching. So i asked him...did he know of her or was she coming? He did, and know she wasn't. :( Back to square one.
After hours of drawing with my knew found friends....we became closer to the point that we started sharing stories and drawing tips...Tomokazu (Tomo) was very interested in showing me his art work, he insisted in showing me a caricature of Harry Potter and company that he wanted to submit to the convention floor.....after looking at it and studying it for a minute....i noiced the signature Tabata...and how it was written....and remembered the photo of the Tomokazu Ogawa girls drawing and remembering why the signature never matched her name. I quickly asked him if he had had that issue on hand....he did...i searched through it...he stated that he was in this issue...i was intrigued....i continued my search i little more confident in my hope to be discovery....when i got the photo that i had grown to enjoy so much....he stopped me and said that is was his...and that there had been some sort of typo. To my great personal embaressment and Joy i was happy to know that for about Three hours i had been drawing next to the guy i wanted to meet the whole time....thinking he was going to be a girl....i later explained the whole thing to him...and we both laughed and he felt kinda proud to have a fan.
We became instant friends then on...along with his other japanese colleagues. Yoichi, Etsuko, Ryo, Emi(buncoro), Mitzuki, Mayuke, and Say-g.
The trip was fun. The experience was great, but nothing will ever compare to the friends I made that day...even the ones I had came with....had become better friends in the end.
